KL Hop On Hop Off, run by Elang Wah Sdn Bhd, operates open-top double-decker sightseeing tours across Kuala Lumpur, connecting more than 60 sites and attractions. It runs a day tour and a night tour, supported by a fleet of 20+ buses.

THE CHALLENGES

Keeping 20-plus buses on the road

A sightseeing fleet only earns when its buses are on the road. For KL Hop On Hop Off, that meant keeping over 20 buses maintained, documented and ready for every tour, with a small technical and operations team behind the scenes.

  • Routine and Ad Hoc Upkeep: Every bus needed regular servicing as well as unplanned repairs, and the technical team had to keep both on track across the whole fleet.
  • Compliance Paperwork: Documents such as road tax renewals had to be prepared and submitted to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), so deadlines couldn't be missed.
  • Tight Scheduling: Tours run to a timetable, so scheduling and driver attendance had to stay on time.
  • Parts Without a Clear Trail: Spare parts moving in and out of stock needed to be tracked accurately, down to the individual item.
  • Issues Spotted Late: Problems found during a driver's daily or weekly checks needed to reach the technical team quickly, so they could be handled before becoming breakdowns.

Before and after FieldEx

Operational Area Before FieldEx With FieldEx
Maintenance Routine and ad hoc jobs for 20 buses had to be tracked and coordinated manually by the team. Routine and ad hoc maintenance are managed as work orders in one system.
Parts and Inventory Spare parts movements had to be tracked item by item. Barcode tagging records parts in and out, and scanning shows each asset's data.
Compliance Ducuments Road tax and other documents had to be tracked and submitted to JPJ on time. Compliance records are kept with each bus, so upcoming submissions are easy to see.
Driver Checks Issues were only caught during scheduled maintenance or “hearing noises” indicating potential issues. Drivers complete checklists in the app, and each check can create a repair job order automatically.

THE SOLUTION

How KL Hop On Hop Off uses FieldEx

KL Hop On Hop Off uses FieldEx to manage its bus fleet from one platform. The rollout started with the technical team and was then extended to the drivers who spot problems first.

  • Barcode-Tagged Assets: Buses and parts carry barcodes. Scanning one brings up the asset's data, so the team has the information at hand without searching.
  • Routine and Ad Hoc Maintenance in One Place: Scheduled servicing and unplanned repairs are managed as work orders, giving the technical team a clear view of what's due and what's in progress.
  • Parts In and Out, Tracked: Spare parts are recorded as they enter and leave stock, so inventory stays accurate.
  • Compliance Documents in One Place: Records such as road tax renewals are kept with each bus, so what's due for submission to JPJ is easy to see.
  • Driver Checklists Trigger Repairs (Phase 2): In the second phase, bus drivers were given access to the checklist app. Their daily and weekly checks create repair job orders automatically, so the technical team can assess issues early and act before they turn into breakdowns.

With FieldEx, KL Hop On Hop Off now manages maintenance, parts and driver checks for its 20-plus buses from one system. Issues found during daily and weekly checks reach the technical team as repair job orders, so they can be assessed and handled in a preventive way. The phased rollout, which was driven by the chief operations officers, began with the technical team and now includes drivers, gives the company a solid base to build on.
